Using blogs in the classroom

Though I am familiar with what blogs are, I have never set one up myself. Since I have started my own blog site I have noticed how helpful a blog can be. Posting a blog allows me to ask a question and receive a number of answers from a number of different people from around the world. What a powerful tool to have at our disposal!

I have been thinking how a blog would work in my classroom. I feel that the students could benefit from using a blog just as long as they do not abuse the privilege of it. I teach high school engineering and my students could benefit from a blog by posting questions they have, in regards to a project or activity, and receive answers from real-world engineers. Also they could use a blog to post questions about what to expect in college, or what is expected when they get into the real-world, or request information on a certain engineering pathway they may be interested in. I feel that the students would most benefit from a blog in this manner. I am not sure how else a blog would help?

Is there anyone that is a teacher that uses blogs in their classroom, or is there an engineer that has some ideas to how a blog could help a student in a high school environment?

  1. Hi Mike.
I think using your blog as a place for questions and answers is great, especially then getting answers from real-world engineers. Only, how would you arrange for these engineers to be able to blog back these answers? I think it would be a wonderful idea, especially when these students are looking to the future.
Also, would you be grading these blogs? Would students be obligated to post?

Unfortunately, I am still new to blogging so I have not incorporated into my teaching, however I know the English department in my school has all there students blogging as part of their assignments.

  2. Grace,

I have yet to use blogs in my class room as well. I do not believe that I would grade the blogs (one more thing for me to grade). I would have the students use them for their own benifit. I am the lead teacher for an engineering academy at the school I'm in and we have a board of members that consist of industry personel, teachers, parents, and students. I would rely on the industry folks to help out in this department as far as being willing to check the blogs and provide feed-back for the students.

  3. I understand about the grading! I think that would be a great idea having other people in your department and industry department make comments and help the students out. Would you have all the students be able to post blogs or only those in your classroom?

  4. I would open it to anyone. There are a lot of engineering students, high school and college, around the world that would be able to give their input and benifit from it.
